All That Sparkles and Shines in the Miniature Garden

Bottles of Pixie DustAfter the holiday festivities are over, the rest of the winter season can feel a bit “blah.” The Christmas tree is taken down. The decorations are put away. The lights and inflatable characters are retired from front yards until next year. Kids begin the countdown anew.

Luckily, gardeners have the opportunity to keep the warmth and joy of the holidays going long after the last of the wrapping paper has been recycled and the final stale cookie has been gobbled up. Whether you build container gardens to be enjoyed indoors or prefer to work outdoors, miniature gardens and miniature plants offer plenty of magic.

That magical feeling is easily amplified by the addition of all things sparkly and shiny. For gardeners who love containers, there are many metallic containers available that provide a shining contrast to plants, pairing especially well with dark foliage. Once you have found the container of your dreams, you can move on to decorating with lights, sparkles, and glitter.

Lights

Another fun addition that will literally light up the garden is an LED light string. A light string can be twisted into an arbor or carefully strung throughout the branches of a miniature tree. Depending on your style, you can choose a classic cool white, ambient white, or even bright colors like red, blue, or rainbow. You do not need to worry about electricity, as most varieties are battery-powered.

Some are even able to be submerged in water, so you can clear your mind of concerns about rain or garden ponds. Go ahead, decorate the space around the miniature lake or waterfall. String up some lights near the beach scene. If your fairy garden has a fence, try stringing some lights across the top, circling your entire miniature garden in a warm glow.

Miniature Accessories

No need to wait until the sun goes down. While LED light strings can add a fairytale feeling after dark, the fairy garden can sparkle and shine in the daytime, too. Try a few glass bottles of Fairy Dust! These bottles, each filled with a different color of metallic fairy dust, can decorate a fairy table or patio. Pile a few in a wheelbarrow. Situate them behind miniature rocks and plants. Tuck a few away in a secret hiding place, and let young garden visitors find them. You can tell visitors about the magical powers that fairy dust holds. It is said that if you sprinkle a little in the palm of your hand, make a wish, and blow the dust into the air, your wish will come true.

For a fairy garden that is dreaming of spring, decorate with a Glitter Wish Banner. Banners add fun to the miniature garden, especially when placed at the entrance to a fairy neighborhood, or across a special path. Sparkly gold letters sway in the breeze while butterflies almost look like they are fluttering in the sky.

Remember: Holiday decorations can be repurposed and used during the other months of the year. Christmas tree garlands can be strung on other miniature trees or even hung from the gutters of a fairy cottage, adding sparkle with their stars, bows, and lights. Sparkling presents can be gathered together, placed on a picnic table, and used for a lively birthday party scene.

As you transition from the holiday season into the weeks of winter still to come, know that the miniature garden can still be a place of light and warmth, even on the darkest and coldest days of the year.
