Celebrate Red, White, and Blue in the Fairy Garden

With Memorial Day approaching, I love to plan a large barbecue for all my friends. It is like planning a miniature garden; there are many decisions. In preparation for the big party, I decorate my whole home in red, white, and blue accessories to honor and remember the people who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. I start with the flower area on my front porch, where I place a white container and I plant flowers in each color to honor this holiday. On my deck, I like to add a festive fairy garden with miniature patriotic garden accessories, fairy houses, and fairies. When my husband was out shopping the other day, he came home with a heavy, wide, and shallow ceramic planter for my newest miniature fairy garden. He thought it would be the perfect platform to tell my story.

I intend to create a couple of my own accessories for the garden. I had seen a tutorial online about how to paint smooth rocks to celebrate this day. I want to be able to stack two stones, where the one on the bottom will be painted with white and blue stripes, while the one on the top will be decorated with red and white stars. The scene I desire to capture is a summer barbecue, which will be splashed together with flowers, flags, streamers, and balloons. I will start by turning the garden into a miniature version of the day I was honoring and celebrating with my friends. The focal point will be a unique and appropriate blue fairy house called, Thistle Cottage. This home is made out of a material called, Hypertufa, which is a combination of concrete and peat moss. When in the sunshine, Hypertufa will naturally grow moss on its own roof!

Next, I will surround the house with miniature plants such as Bellium minutum, also known as ‘Miniature Daisy.’ The dainty plant offers a bright white contrast to the blue of the home. Then I will select some miniature accessories that match well with the patriotic theme. I will prop a flagpole in front of the house and add a bright red picnic table. The flagpole and picnic table will capture every color within the garden accessories, as well coordinating with the colors in the painted rocks, and small flags. In addition, I will take these small flags and insert them into all the flower boxes, containers, and planters at my home.

Also, I will add some flag pennants along the side of my home, because I want to make sure that I include extra stars and stripes to the decorations. I love being able to plan this celebration with my friends and to create a miniature garden to honor Memorial Day!
