Once upon a time, a fairy, fairy long time ago, before the Gnoman Empire, before the Gnomads traveled all over the lands, before the Human Gee-Gnome was discovered, but… a little after Gnomo-sapiens had suddenly got the urge to stand up and walk their walk and talk their talk, there was a tiny undisturbed hamlet in a place hidden away and UnbeGnomest to man.

The time had come to say farewell. Asarum was full of eagerness to see
his parents and neighbors, and to live once again in his beloved
woodland. But he had come to love his cousins and their town of
Summer. He would miss his little cottage, his garden, and even the
Big People.

Asarum's cousins stopped by to recruit him for a game of fairy stick. They
were quite surprised to find him raking up leaves. This was the sort
of thing the Big People did! Of all the chores Asarum might do, this

Asarum's cousins were almost finished with their preparations for the winter. They just needed a little wax for their candles and a little honey for their cakes. "I guess we can't put it off any longer," said Dicentra. "Shall we

Asarum stopped in to visit his cousins on a perfect autumn afternoon. He
found Levisticum hard at work trying to divide some plants. Levi

I'm glad for an excuse for a break. Can I get you some tea?"

Asarum's cousin Levisticum came knocking on the door one August day. "Time to learn all about apples!" Levisticum said brightly. "How
wonderful!" replied Asarum. His cousins had been telling him all
summer about apples. In his native woodland, they didn't have any
of this fruit, but it seemed very important to these fairies in the
village. He was eager to find out how they tasted.

Asarum and Nymphaea decided to do a little fishing one fine afternoon at the
pond near Asarum's cottage. They perched on an old wooden bridge
over the channel that fed the pond, chatting and laughing in between
checking their lines.

A heavy July rain soaked everything in the town of Summer. Pools formed
in the low places, connected by rivulets of runoff. Perfect timing to
try out the canoe Asarum had just carved from a tree limb!
