One warm summer day, Asarum was bringing his cousins some sumac to teach them how to make a tangy drink with it. When he arrived at their
cottage, he found Dicentra staring forlornly at her rose bushes.

"AH-CHOOOO!" Ned Anderson was in the midst of a dreadful summer cold. "AH-CHOOOO!" Ursula Anderson's cold was even more drastic. Neither of them had been able to tend their garden all week, and with a
drought in full-swing, they were in danger of losing some of their
favorite vegetables and flowers. Asarum stared forlornly at their
shriveled corn, withered zinnias, and parched cabbage. For days...

The days were growing hot in Summer. Asarum took to waking up early to
work in his garden before the worst of the heat set in. One morning,
with the sun just barely peeking over the horizon, he strolled down
the path to the shed for his tools. He saw a spritely little figure
in the predawn mist, moving about the flowers.

"What do the Big People use this for?" Asarum held up a shiny piece of
woven metal. "They were sprinkling something on the ground and
circling some pretty plants with this. The woman was saying something
about how it would make her a good hostess."

Dearest Father, How are you? I hope you are well, and I think of you often.
What an experience this trip has been! Thank you for your advice in
encouraging me to go out and see other parts of fairydom. I want to
tell you that you should be very proud of your nieces and nephew.
They are all such kind, honest, and light-hearted fairies. They are

Asarum's garden was growing lush and lovely. Yet when his cousins stopped by, they expressed alarm at how weedy it had become. They immediately
rolled up their sleeves. Asarum thanked them and promised to make
them a feast when the work was done.

One day in early June, Asarum headed toward his garden to check on its
progress. The fairy carried a little pail of water to refill the
birdbath. But when he opened the garden gate and stepped inside, he
saw his younger cousin Nymphaea had already filled it. She was
staring intently into its water. As he approached, he soon realized
that a large turtle gazed back at her with equal intensity.

Asarum loved to watch the Big People. They did such puzzling things. They
used gadgets for all kinds of things that could be easily
accomplished with just a little magic. And sometimes they did things
that made no sense at all. Asarum was enjoying a lovely summer day
under the bushes when he heard a metallic sound further down the
hedge. Clip. Clip. Clip.

The days were growing warmer. During the last full weekend in May, Asarum set off to his cousins' house to see if they would help him plant his tomatoes and peppers. When he arrived, he found them gazing into a translucent sphere.

The sun shone warmly on Asarum's wings, though the air still held a bit
of chill. His cousin Dicentra was showing him how to divide day
lilies, but he kept getting distracted and flitting about to chase
after bits of leaves caught by the breeze. Dicentra giggled and gave
chase too from time to time. Whenever they returned breathless to the
earth, she would give a few instructions.
