Hats in the Fairy Garden – Fashionable or Functional?

When I am thinking about planning a miniature garden, I lean toward the creative and artistic looking miniature fairies. I realized when browsing through a catalog of these magical creatures that fairies adore wearing every different type of hat possible, and I assume that is due to their imaginative nature. Seeing these intricate garden fairies unintentionally causes new fairy garden ideas to pop into my head. When you spend some time looking through the fairies and gnomes that are available online, it becomes obvious how much our fairy friends love to accessorize with hats. Essentially hats are designed to be a head cover, but they can serve a purpose that is either fashionable or functional. Sometimes we wear hats to keep warm in the cold winter, and other times we wear them to enhance an outfit with a unique and fun accessory.

I have fallen in love with the process of picking out miniature garden accessories and because of this, I spend too much time picking out gnomes, fairies, miniature houses, miniature plants, and other mini accessories that can dress up a fairy garden.  One fairy selection is a petite child who has dressed up in her mom’s clothing, which is a light blue sundress with subtle pink ballet flats. She is a sweet little thing with a blue hat and wings to enhance her dress, and her pink heart-shaped sunglasses match her little shoes. Her hat choice was clearly made to be fashionable and she totally pulled it off. This little fairy, in her blue hat, would be the perfect addition to a mother’s garden in honor of her beautiful tiny daughter.

When I think of a more functional use for a hat, I am drawn to a fairy named, Lily. She is a tiny girl in a green smock with orange butterflies flying across her garment. She is layering the look with blue leggings and green wings, while holding a handful of bright flowers. The hat she is wearing is a straw hat perfect to protect your face from the shining sun while you are wrist-deep in mud spending the day gardening and working with miniature plants. Lily has even dressed the hat up slightly with a red ribbon and a few small flowers to make the hat serve its purpose to protect her face. but also to match her style as a regular gardener.

The next time you sit down to work on a miniature garden remember that what the fairy is wearing is as much a part of their personality as the miniscape you designed. Will your fairies be dressed in the latest and most fashionable hat or will they be sporting a functional cap to keep the sun out of their eyes?
