Mary Engelbreit’s Style in Fairy Gardening

Fairy sitting in the miniature gardenYou know Mary Engelbreit’s style when you see it. Bright colors, eye-catching details, and lovable characters all populate Engelbreit’s bestselling calendars, books, accessories, cards, and so much more.

At first, you might not connect the dots between the iconic illustrator and the miniature garden. It helps to think about the feelings her designs inspire. Warmth, light, happiness, sunshine, and whimsy are all present in Engelbreit’s illustrations. The truth is, there are plenty of ways to incorporate Mary Engelbreit’s bright and playful style into your own miniature garden. You can choose miniature accessories from her licensed collection or design your fairy garden with her style in mind. If you want to Engelbreit-ify your miniature garden, now is the time!

Pattern and Color

If you look at any of ME’s famous illustrations that feature home interiors or other buildings, you might notice that she tends to feature plenty of bright colors, especially in sunrise colors like red, orange, and yellow. When planning your fairy garden, you can choose miniature plants, flowers, and succulents that have similar sunrise tones. Colorful collections of flowers feature heavily in her art.

Look for miniature accessories like benches, chairs, and fairy houses in red and yellow colors. ME is also not afraid to incorporate patterns into her illustrations. Black and white squares, checks, borders, and tile are some of her favorites.

How can you incorporate patterns into your fairy garden? Black and white tiles make an attractive footpath for fairies to traverse, or they could be used as a border around flowers and miniature plants. Look for shiny tiles to add contrast against natural plants, soil, and rocks.

In addition to squares and flowers, Engelbreit’s art often features polka dots. In the miniature garden, you can add miniature accessories with polka dot patterns. Miniature polka-dotted dishes, tea sets, tables, beach blankets, and other decorative accents can be easily added to the fairy garden.

Garden Residents

If you take a peek at any of Engelbreit’s children’s books or calendars, you will notice the number of animals she highlights in her art. From terriers and bunnies to geese and bears, she does not shy away from wildlife.

Give your miniature garden some Engelbreit flair by adding miniature animals of your choice. Perhaps you add a dolphin and lobster to an ocean scene, or “adopt” some miniature pets for your garden fairies. A springtime garden could benefit from bunnies, chicks, and even a well-placed beehive.

Of course, if you prefer to add human residents to the miniature garden instead of wild animals, there are many to choose from. Engelbreit often featured characters in her books that were strong girls, so you might consider adding young fairies who like to go on adventures, read books, play sports, grow vegetables, or make art.

Engelbreit also illustrated many well-known stories, such as nursery rhymes, fairy tales, the Nutcracker, and Mother Goose verses. See if you can find some miniature accessories that remind you of these beloved classics. It could be as simple as adding some of “Bo-Peep’s” sheep to your fairy garden, or setting up a “Jack and Jill” scene.

When it comes to designing a fairy garden that is inspired by Mary Engelbreit, all you need to do is remember how Engelbreit’s art makes you feel. If you focus on cheerful, bright colors filled with favorite patterns and characters, you will have a miniature garden that delights even the grumpiest of garden guests.
