Miniature Fairy Gardens Inspire Happiness

When I look at a miniature garden that was built by somebody else's creative hand, I often attempt to see what inspired them. I look at a fairy garden and I notice the small fairy house that looks like it was inspired by a real-sized yellow cottage.  There are many small details to inspect such as the beautiful, miniature plants that flank either side of the home and the colorful “Bee Happy” sign propped up in the front yard. I take time to notice and appreciate the garden chair with a charming painted butterfly on it and a welcome mat that has a stone walkway leading up to the fairy house. You can clearly see that whoever was designing this fairy garden was trying to recreate a happy place from their past that still brings them joy in the present.

The beauty of a miniature garden decorated with garden accessories is that it can mean many things to many different people. I know when I saw this garden I thought of a place I had imagined a thousand times. I know that a fair number of people would run away to a cottage in the woods if they could. I often think about spending a year alone in a cabin or cottage and really focusing and dedicating myself to writing my novel. It is one of those guilty pleasure fantasies where you have no distractions and you are surrounded by nature with inspiration for your next big idea.

Everyone's ultimate happy place is somewhere completely different, and when I am putting together a garden with a big “Bee Happy” sign, I want to capture the unique location that brings me the most joy. I really consider what makes my most pleasant place. Utilizing fairy houses, miniature plants and trees, and garden accessories to dress up my garden to be something that brightens my home, reminds me to be happy every single day. I asked my older brother what his ‘happy place’ on this earth is and he told me fishing a walleye lake in Wisconsin. He is referencing the cabin my family vacations at every summer and the days he spends on the water hoping to catch a big fish. Therefore, if I were to create a happy miniature garden just for him, I would use blue glass pebbles to design a lake scene with a fishing boat sitting on the water. In the background would be a rustic cabin sitting on top of the hill. Thinking about this garden makes me smile, because I can see my brother sitting in the boat fishing and being very content.

Every one of us has a different definition of what happiness means to us – it is wonderful that we can see our own happiness even when we are looking at someone else’s interpretation of it. It really reminds us of the things we should be. Creating a miniature garden that represents happiness, is a pleasure that people of all ages or genders can be inspired by.
